This document discusses the various aspects that relate to functional and technical user requirements on tracking and tracing systems. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of some aspects relating to the usage of IT systems in freight transport. Functional requirements and user requirements are discussed in chapter 2; these lead to a number of technical and system requirements which are described in chapter 3. Finally, security requirements are outlined in chapter 4. Some background information is provided in the Appendices. Annex A outlines and discusses the different roles users and customers may assume in relation to tracking and tracing. Descriptions of a tracking and tracing system in a business context, and a sample logistics process, which incorporates tracking and tracing and identifies the roles of the individual stakeholders in this process is given in annex B. A summary of which type of ID-device is required to meet which requirement is given in annex C. Finally, annex D provides a list of abbreviations.
