This International Standard provides guidance for the assessment of the fire characteristics and performance of fibre-reinforced composites, particularly in structural applications in buildings and transport. The guidance is relevant to composites prepared from a variety of thermoset and thermoplastic resins and reinforced by various fibres, which may be inorganic (such as glass fibre) or organic (such as carbon fibre, cellulosic fibre, etc). The physical forms of these fibre-reinforced composites and their production processes can also vary significantly. The guidance may be applied to composites produced as single sheets, laminates, profiled sections, some sandwich constructions with fibre-reinforced composite skins, etc. The fibre-reinforced composites may also be those that are assembled as products containing other materials (such as metals or inorganic non-fibrous fillers) and as systems containing airgaps, joints, fixings, etc. This guide draws attention to the unsuitability of some standard fire test methods for certain applications of fibre-reinforced composites, such as those involving large area or thick sections. Handling and storage recommendations for the fire safety management of fibre-reinforced composites are given in Annex B. In addition, some guidance on how to tackle fires involving fibre-reinforced composites is provided in Annex C.
