This standard specifies general magnetic acceptance levels and acceptance criteria for the assessment of surface-breaking imperfections that may occur in ferromagnetic steel welds during manufacture. It is not intended for special conditions such as those that can occur during the service life of a weldment, e.g. corrosive environment etc. Assessment of the significance of imperfections in weldments of this type shall be subject to special agreement. The acceptance criteria are based on detection capabilities that may be expected when using techniques specified in document prEN (00121045) and test surface conditions defined by this standard. Three acceptance levels are defined, 1 to 3. The detection thresholds and surface conditions specified for each are based on a reliable detection probability. The test surface is defined as the zone which includes the weld metal and the parent metal 15 mm on each side of the weld, or the widths of the heat affected zones. Use of the acceptance levels defined by this standard and their compatibility with other standards, specifications or codes is dependent on interpretation and agreement between the contracting parties.
