This standard specifies requirements for an energy management system, which is a system that will enable the organization to take a systematic approach to the continual improvement of energy performance, and which takes into account legal obligations and other requirements to which the organization needs to subscribe. The standard lays down requirements for continual improvement in the form of a more efficient and more sustainable use of energy, irrespective of the type of energy. The standard does not itself state specific performance criteria with respect to energy. The standard is valid for all factors affecting energy use that can be monitored and influenced by the organization. This standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to manage its energy through: a) improving its energy performance in a systematic way; b) establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system; This standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to: a) ensure that it conforms with its stated energy policy; b) demonstrate such conformance to others; c) seek certification of its energy management system by an external organization; d) make a self-evaluation and self-declaration of conformance with the standard. This energy management systems standard has been designed to be used independently but can be aligned or integrated with other management systems.
