The purpose of this European Standard is to provide essential performance requirements for protective helmets for Firefighters whilst firefighting in buildings and other structures. The helmets in this Standard can be used for other activities subject to a Risk Assessment. This standard allows options to take account of particular national requirements. The standard also includes guidance on selection, use, care and maintenance in an informative annex. Fire fighters should be trained in the use, care and maintenance of helmets covered by this standard, including an understanding of any limitation. The standard deals with two types of helmets: a type A and a type B. Selection of the type of helmet and any optional equipment should be made following a comprehensive risk assessment. This standard primarily specifies minimum safety requirements for the protection of the upper head. Requirements for the protection of the lower face and the neck, where relevant, are covered by other European standards, which are referenced in this standard. However helmets incorporating means of protecting the firefighters lower face and neck are not excluded from complying with this standard. Figures 1 to 5 are integral parts of this standard.
