This also includes safety devices, which are operated outside areas with potentially explosive atmospheres, to guarantee the safe function of equipment or protective systems in order to control explosion hazards. By means of control or monitoring devices, sources of ignition can be avoided. Safety devices can be used e.g. to detect the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere and to switch off sources of ignition. Therefore these devices should execute the appropriate measures in the appropriate reaction time, for example the initiation of an alarm or an automatic shut down. The application of safety devices that comply with this standard allows the realisation of systems which meet the requirements of the categories of electric devices defined in Directive 94/9/EC. Examples of safety devices are - a pump, pressure regulating device, back-up storage device, etc., ensuring sufficient pressure and flow for feeding a hydraulically actuated safety system (with respect to the ignition hazard), - overload protective devices for electric motors of type of protection EEx e 'Increased Safety', - a controller unit for sensors of temperature, pressure, flow, etc., which is located in a safe area, for providing information used in the control (in terms of further avoiding an ignition hazard) of electrical apparatus, used in production or servicing operations in a potentially explosive area, - control devices for battery charging equipment (protection against overcharging or deep discharging), - thermal protecting devices (such as ), - control devices for type of protection pressurisation, - motor protection circuits (e.g. to limit temperature rise during stall conditions or inverter operation), - gas detectors, when used to control potential ignition sources (performance requirements defined e.g. by EN 50402, EN 50271), - level detectors for the control of submersion pumps, - flame detectors. Safety devices, which are adequately covered in the existing standards of EN 60079 and EN 61241 series and are not complex safety devices according to 3.1.6 are excluded from the scope of this standard. Examples: Integrated current and voltage limitation in IS apparatus (barriers and galvanic isolators), fuses, intrinsically safe associated apparatus, electromechanical overload protection, thermal protection device.
