This International Standard specifies the gradient column method for the density determination of non-cellular injection moulded or extruded plastics in a void-free form. Pellets can be included in this International Standard as long as they are void free. Density gradient columns are columns of liquid mixtures, the densities of which, increase uniformly from top to bottom. Density is used frequently to follow the variations in physical structure or composition of specimens. It is the preferred property relating mass and volume of a sample. Density may also be useful in assessing uniformity amongst samples or specimens. The density of plastic materials will often depend upon the choice of the specimen preparation method. When this is applicable, precise details of the specimen preparation method will be found in the appropriate material specification.
