This International Standard specifies the functional requirements and principles for design, operation and requalification of pipelines in the petroleum and natural gas industries using reliability based limit state methods. Pipeline integrity management during design and operation are performed by the following two approaches: - a deterministic appraoch, with the use of safety/ usage factors applied on characteristic loads and resistance properties, and - a probabilistic approach, with an application of structural reliability analysis, e.g. the use of reliability based limit state methods. Both approaches are referring to actual limit states or failure modes based on either a deterministic or a probabilistic approach, and both fulfil the safety requirements; implicity by the deterministic approach (via a calibration) and explicity by the probabilistic approach as illustrated in figure 1. The scope of this International Standard covers reliability based limit state methods according to the right side of Figure 1. (probabilistic approach). Recommendations are also given in the informative annexes on how to apply the reliability approach to calibrate partial safety factors to be used in the deterministic approach following the steps of the left side of the figure.
