This standard defines the characteristics related to thermal inertia of complete building elements and gives methods for their calculation. It also defines the information on building materials required for its use. Since the characteristics depend on the way materials are combined to form building elements, the standard cannot be applied to building materials or to unfinished building elements. The definitions proposed in this standard can be applied to any building element. However, the calculation method is valid only for those composed of one or more plane layers of homogeneous materials may lead to erroneous results. The calculation of the thermal inertia characteristics of elements containing thermal bridges should be made by solving the equation of heat transfer, under boundary conditions, with more detailed methods, such as finite difference and finite element techniques.
